Progress? (Progress!)

This month has been busy with different kindy activities, so we haven't been focusing very much on learning our ABCs and making progress with our letters. Ms. P. has, however, been interested in learning how to write notes to her grandparents, so we've been working on that. I think it's so important to nurture any indication of interest, regardless of how small, so she'll keep up the good work she's done so far.

She's able to write her own name without prompting (either in the spelling, or the way to write the letters). This is a great start. She is continuing to have trouble matching the correct sound to the correct letter (for example, "effff" for the letter "f"), but when we read, I try to show her how to "read" certain sight words.

We're currently reading "Fancy Nancy Collector's Quintet (I Can Read Book 1)," which includes Fancy Nancy at the Museum, Fancy Nancy and the Boy from Paris, Fancy Nancy Sees Stars, Poison Ivy Expert and The Dazzling Book Report. I love the vocabulary building throughout the book. Even though it is far beyond Ms. P's reading level, she is always questioning what certain words mean when she hears something on TV or the radio, and it's great to use books to build on things she already knows.
